A friend of mine has a server sitting in his room, not being used. I want to load Linux on it and run a Counter Strike server. Problem i, I'm not exactly sure how to do this. Some questions are as follows...

1:Which distro would be best for a gaming server?
2:Would I have to emulate Steam and a dedicated server through Steam in order to do this? Or would it be a different non-Steam way?
3:Would it be free? I have a T3 connection available, so, I'm wondering if I would need to pay for any of this.

Thank you in advance for any info.

First off, start here:

How to setup a Counter Strike Server in Linux

Secondly, what distro? That's based solely on preference. They didn't specify what server, but use what distro you're comfortable in. I would recommend Mandrake or SuSE if you're a newbie - if you don't mind reading/wading through documentation, I would highly suggest Gentoo.

T3, nice. So how did you get the T3 connection?

it doesn't really matter...a distro that supports glibc 2.2 or 2.3, which is about all of them right now.

just download and run this file, this will get your dedicated server on steam...

it does NOT cost anything to run a Counter strike (source or 1.6) dedicated server.
