So I have this old Laptop. It is a Toshiba Satelite 2805-S202. It used to run Windows ME. That was bad, so I tried to get some ubuntu on it. It wont boot off the LiveCD,( only 256 mb's of RAM) So I had to go to the "Install" button. That only got 22% of the way. It partitioned the HDD, and for some reason, didnt install Ubuntu. So now I was stuck with a laptop that had no operating system. The computer will not boot most CD's. I thought it might have been the CD's I was using, and that did help. Not enough. ANother variety of linux that I was trying(puppy) booted, but then said FATAL KERNEL FAIL and would not go any further. So far all I have been able to get onto a hdd install is Damn Small Linux. It is just the base of funculaty. I am trying to get something else on. So far I have tried:
Puppy(kernel fail)

Ubuntu (stops at 22% with an error message saying that either the CD or HDD is too hot

DSL: works, but has base funcinality

Edubuntu: Hangs at 6% Programs installing

Debian: Says that one of the installer components are missing, I suspect that this is a bittorent issue, I will download it from a Mirror.

Mandrava and Knoppix are currently downloading.

The stats are:

P3 700 MHZ
256 MB RAM
10 gig HDD
nonremarkable video card
Asl for anything else, and I will tell

Please help me, as I have a laptop with almost no funcinality.

Someone might want to move this to Alt.OS since you're trying to many flavors of linux.

Are you trying to install ubuntu via the live cd or alternate install?

You might want to identify what this "nonremarkable video card " is

As a thought before installation, perhaps doing a dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda might show some love with installation.
