My computer is really starting to piss me off. I'll leave out the irrelevant problems and just stick to this one.

When I try to boot up Ubuntu 8.10 LiveCD, Ubuntu loads up, screen turns off, and when it comes back on, it's pure white. Pressing any key combos doesn't do anything. Is my video card too new or something? Ubuntu 8.04 booted up ok, despite that it wouldn't let me have anything but minimum resolution. The reason I'm going with 8.10 over 8.04 is that I'm hoping my Trendnet TEW423PI wireless card will work.

Any ideas or help would be much appreciated. Thanks guys.

Did you try installing video drivers for it when it borked up?
I've had that happen a long time ago.

You might try this.

Sounds like you're using the open source radeon (which I think comes stock with 8.10) and IIRC, aren't exactly the greatest thing with the 4000 cards.

Perhaps passing a kernel argument at boot time, like vga=771, until you can get the ATI binaries installed will give some love. That should force VESA at 800X600 with 8 bit color.

If you're looking at an install, I'd probably recommend getting the alternate install disk.

Thank you Furball. I'll try throwing that option in there,

I've already got the alternate ISO. I'm kind of hit by a double wammy right now. My Wireless won't work in Linux (or Vista, or 7), so I'm trying to work around that by using a router as a wireless bridge, and then I can screw around with getting my cutting-edge hardware working in Linux.

I'll definitely give that a go. Thank you so much for the tip.
