Trying to set up an Ubuntu (8.10 server disc, freshly downloaded) server... Pretty simple hardware wise...

1.4 Ghz T-bird
ASUS A7V (http://www.dansdata.com/a7v.htm)
1 GB SDRAM
80 GB HHD (Seagate, don't know the model) IDE
Cd/DVD burner, Lite-On I believe (or LG?) IDE
Riva TNT2 AGP (hey! I had it laying around)
Adaptec Sata Connect card (currently empty, do plan to install drives later)

Boots to the CD just fine, loads the set up, I can partition and install just fine. Machine reboots and one of two things happens. I get a black screen with a blinking _ cursor OR I get a disk failure / OS message (don't remember exactly...)

Thoughts?

"Old". Not sure exactly on the age. maybe 6 or so years? I am pretty sure it worked before... bios detects it, it obviously spins up, ubuntu properly reads it's size.

Hrm. There goes the easy answer. :(

I think we need the error message that you see to diagnose this further.

It could still be the drive though... I haven't ruled it out. i didn't think to check it further because it was working for the install fine. It just doesn't boot up after install...

I am 98% sure this is the error message if I don't get the blinking cursor:

"DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER"

Are you doing the direct install or are you loading up the Live OS first then installing?
I seem to always have issues if I don't load up the Live OS first.
It sounds like your MBR is toasted.

Yep, that sounds like an MBR issue to me as well.

The server install disc does not have a LiveCD installer. I will drop a LiveCD in and pre-partition / do my disk stuff (new partition tables probably in order) then do the server install?

You could start over.
First fix the MBR.
You can do this by booting to XP cd and choosing repair option.
FIXMBR
FIXBOOT commands
Then go your route as you stated.
Should be kinda fool proof that way.

Why not just run supergrubdisc? I'd had MBR problems in the past, and if you're using Linux on your rig at all SGD is a great thing to have around.

Okay... this is retarded...

Blindly fumbling in the BIOS I turned off the second channel on the primary IDE controller (killing the channel the CD drive is on)

I get a grub menu.... wtf?

I go back, reset everything, turn it back on... blinking cursor

::scratches head::

enable onboard promise ide, switch dvd drive to secondary controller...

::waits extra time for the secondary controller bios to boot::

grub menu...

this is retarded. I don't want to put the CD drive on the other controller if I don't have to....
