If there is any interest I would share some of the scripts I have written in powershell.

For those that don't know, or have not used powershell, it is the windows version of 'bash' basically. Leveraging .NET in the windows world has made powershell very user friendly and reasonably easy to learn.

How about a short and simple how-to on installing java and configuring the browser plugins?

I know you can get that pretty easily on the 'net but most of the docs are not aimed at the new linux user. I know it took me forever to figure out how to make a simple symlink.

I just installed JDK 1.6_11 and apache tomcat on a machine and found a new tool that I never new about before 'update-alternatives' which made installing java a snap.

It'd be hard to write an article on something so easy though. Seriously.

Download the Linux self-extracting package from Sun.

sh filename.bin

answer prompts.

With the newer distros like Fedora and Ubuntu, it's already in the repos.

sudo apt-get install sun-java6-bin sun-java6-jre
or
yum install sun-java6-bin sun-java6-jre

I still like the Samba idea.
