Did I miss something? If you like Knoppix and all you want to do is add NTFS support, which is available in the new kernels, just download and install a new kernel - why make life hard!!!
Head over to kernel.org and download the latest and greatest. Read the documentation that comes with the kernel. It is quite good. If you have any questions before upgrading the kernel, ask here before going through the process. As a bonus, you'll learn quite a bit about Linux going this route.
Hint: grep 'make oldconfig' in the docs section. It will save you a lot of time.
Welp, here's the deal (and my decision),
The problem with Knoppix was that even with the new kernal I was told you could not write to NTFS (or that it was unwise). This turns out to be (as I understand it) both correct and incorrect.
I just picked up "Knoppix Hacks" by Rankin and Knopper. Within it is clarity.
I use 3.2 (I think), I have 3.4 on CD now, but they are upto 3.6. Alot has changed with Knoppix. Its what I am going to use. You can use captive NTFS now and the install options have grown. As well, I am told hardware support is now much wider. It comes with a number of utilities designed to repair MS Windows as well.
I like debian, and knoppix now allows one to back install Debian in a few different ways (since its debian based anyway). Mainly to Debian Unstable. The Knoppix installer can also be used for Gentoo install (without the Gentoo CD). Rankin based DSL on Knoppix which gives me hope I can hack together a nice Multi OS bootable utility CD.
I am pretty amazed at how much Knoppix has grown in just a few versions. Its not just a Newbie toy anymore (I am told it never was, but it seemed like it to me).
Anyways, thats my chioce.
I get Knoppix wide support, debian roots, NTFS support, easy(ish) install, KDE, etc....
Now if I can just find my computer - it was the move from Hell. Almost died, cat lost another of its 9 lives, movers went out of bussiness, rented truck was vapor ware, friends did not show up (loaded truck on new years day), and all the stuff that was supposed to be in the house ended up in storage and vice versa.
BTW Gadget - I got my MS officailly now. DId you ever get that NASA mug??
