I have been doing some searching and come up dry, i have this same issue on the ubuntu community and after trying a few things come up dry again. this is getting fun!

In running an SiS M661 video chipset in my acer travelmate 2313lci
the system is Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid

the problem is I have lost what 3d capabilities I did have (as few as they were) there are simple 3d games and apps I simply cannot run which in windows I could no probs.

the driver isnt showing in hardware devices, we have tried going through synaptic but it says the SiS Generic is already installed.

Does anyone know of or have the proper device driver for this video chipset?

thanks guys!

Did you make sure that "Restricted Drivers" has been turned on?

I'm not sure that the restricted drivers applet is going to help any with a SiS adapter.

Can you go into a terminal and do the following

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE

and post the results?

my initial thought is you got a newer kernel and simply removing and reloading the generic SiS (so it builds against a newer kernel) may be enough to get things going again. In any case, you should be looking at those logs first.

lawless - the restricted drivers app is renamed in 8.10 thats why i didnt get it (my little helmet moment for the day) but I saw it in that tutorial. As far as having the driver itself the only driver listed is the Atheros Wifi support but there is no listing for any other device, even after searching.

furball - this output seems rather... odd or lacking information but here it is anyway just incase im having another helmet moment.

Code:
gryphen@Gryphen:~$ cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(II) Loading extension MIT-SCREEN-SAVER

What that command did was listed the contents of Xorg.0.log, and the grep EE basically told it to display anything with an EE (thus the first line only was displayed)

Basically it allows you to filter everything that loaded and only displayed the Errors. If you do a cat /vat/log/Xorg.0.log | more you'll get a better understanding why it's a little difficult to filter though everything.

What's the device section of your xorg.conf look like? Specifically the line driver. As an example mine looks like this

Section "Device"
BoardName "Radeon HD 2400 Pro"
Driver "fglrx"
Identifier "Device[0]"

Section "Device"
   Identifier   "Configured Video Device"

ok...you're looking for a driver section in there. I'm beginning to believe you're using just a generic driver.

I think I am too, because there is no driver section in my xorg.conf

I dont even think the Generic SiS driver is functioning at all.. I did an online search for this driver and its proving to be a hard thing to find

What i posted above is the WHOLE device section

And admittedly, while I've used ubuntu, I don't run it on an everyday basis. To compound things you have an SiS card (how many people do you know that have those)

Have you tried a sudo modprobe sisfb then restarting X (like via an sudo init 3 and then sudo init 5 or a control-alt-backspace)

Control-alt-backspace just shuts down X. Since GDM is also running, it basically restarts which takes you back to the login screen.

perhaps a reboot then?

Did you get any errors with the modprobe?

Last I heard, SiS drivers and Ubuntu didn't work too terribly well, as you've found out. I had a SiS 761GX video chipset on my last system and I ran Ubuntu 6.10 for quite some time. I never used any 3d apps however.

I wish I could come to the table with any useful info, but it's my speculation that the SiS graphics just can't do the the 3d jobs you're asking of it, or the SiS module in the Linux kernel just isn't working right. If it was trully flawed, you wouldn't be able to run Gnome. It's working, but my guess is that the open-source driver just isn't ready for 3d. This doesn't mean that Windows drivers are better. It just means that there aren't enough Linux kernel developers that use SiS onboard video.

Nope desktop effects wont turn on, i click it, it flickers and goes back to no desktop effects and the error pops up saying my card doesnt support the effects... I do know this card can handle some things desktop effects being one of them, i know it aint the greatest but it works.
