i didnt know how to move this thread, so i guess ill start a new one here. First off, thank you all for the quick replies, and i guess ubuntu server it is. now, i have messed around with the desktop version before and was somewhat confused by it although i didnt give myself very long to learn it as the xp dual boot option was too much of a temptation. i know the first step will be to create the disk from the ISO, but after that i dont really know what to do. any advice would be awesome.

thanks again

actually, somehow i got the desktop edition instead and have installed that. i think it might be better this way as long as i can still get the basic functionality from it that i want. anyone that is willing to walk me through this until i get the hang of it would be awesome

You've got it installed? That is the hardest part ... smooth sailing from here on in!

We're all happy to help ... just post up any questions that you may have (if you can't find an answer already provided in an existing thread) and we'll do our best to help you out.

What is 'it' that you are trying to find on the XP computers? The printer, or the linux PC?

Linux uses a system called Samba to share files / resources with Windows computers. It is installed in Ubuntu by default, I think, but if not you can add it using the Synaptic Package manager

sorry for the confusion. i mean both really. the computer to share files and the printer to, well, print.
