I own LAN Party Home, a company here in TX that hosts LAN patries. I have an old-school Dell Latitude XPi CD with a 133MHZ Pentium and 48MB RAM. I would like to put it to some good use.

I would like to setup a version of linux that does nothing but monitor network activity and show information regarding MAC addresses, IP addresses, Windows Computer Name, and amount of informaiton sent and recieved. These are just some examples. I would like it to not have a mountain of eye canday and as minimalistic on other programs as possible.

Do ya'll know of any version linux that could meet my need? Thanks!

It does not boot from the CD, it needs to have boot floppy to install anything from the CD.

i believe iptraf and netwatch are the tools you are looking for.

http://www.slctech.org/~mackay/netwatch.html
http://cebu.mozcom.com/riker/iptraf/

i believe they use the ncurses library so it is very minimal.

I am not looking for programs that run on linux. I am looking for a full linux distro that runs in a command based that does not use X windows crap. Very similair to http://www.smoothwall.org, but with a better console monitoring interface.

Thanks

I'd suggest Gentoo then, or Debian/etc. OpenBSD would be on the list too - just don't install X is all, that goes for all of them.

You can use MRTG on Linux to pull various SNMP MIB elements to graph lots of different info for every node at your site...you can then serve them up on HTTPd from the laptop and view the graphs from a web client on any machine...

jsut a thought.
