I have built my own Linux system using a mixture of online Books:- DIY-Linux.org (to build the OS system), linuxfromscratch.org (for bootscripts and Udev), CLFS (for the user space kernel headers) and BLFS (to configure and build all the apps and desktop ...).

Dexter wrote:

In my case, I love control. And I have alot of time on my hands. You do end up with a faster system, since you are building a Non-modular kernel. Plus the system software is (or can be) optimized only for the PC you build on (unless you are cross compiling).

And of course, you learn how to configure everything by hand. No automated scripts or programs. True control...

Dexter wrote:

I first used Linux 8 years ago.

What OS do you run?
Debian Lenny/Sid (cause I like the cutting edge)
Debian Etch (for my web/FTP server)
Solaris 10 (training for my SCSA certification)
Windows XP (cause my girlfriend can't live with out the Sims 2)

When did you start using it?
I started using Linux in 2005 cause I couldn't find a working free DVD ripping app for XP. That, and I realized I wanted to pursue a career in Network Administration. I knew Windows had so many faults and I was curious about this "Ubuntu" thing the local computer shop was giving away. Free software? Gotta be too good to be true. I installed Ubuntu 5.10, but I gave up quickly cause Ubuntu didn't like my AOL dial up. Once I was on broadband, I played wit Knoppix, then Ubuntu 6.10, then Debian, Fedora, SuSE, CentOS, Slackware, Solaris 10, FreeBSD.... I use Debian for most everything and it's the only distro I can recommend for every purpose. Desktop? Debian. Servers? Debian, Network appliances? Debian. New to Linux? Debian is good, but Ubuntu is easier to set up.

App Questions:

Which browser?
Iceweasel or Firefox (they're the same thing really)

Email client?
Web-based (Gmail)

Audio and video players?
For Linux, Xine or Mplayer plays my movies, while Rythmbox handles my music.
For Windows, I use VLC for movies, and Windows Media Player 10 for music (I can't stand WMP 11. can't get my music sorted the way I want. Plus, my Athlon64 3500+ is showing it's age.)

Office progs (editors, etc.)?
Open Office on the rare occasions I do any office type work. Nano for doing HTML and text editing.

GUI?
After playing around with several different DEs, I've found I prefer Gnome. I remember really liking KDE when I used Knoppix, but I reacently tried it again and didn't like it. I'll try again when KDE 4 goes stable. If I didn't do so web browsing, I'd just Ctrl+Alt+F1 and have a ball.

General Questions:
What OS do you run?

XP and Ubuntu

Why do you run it?

I have enough junk to build a headless server room but the processors are all sub-par. So, I run XP to play games on the AMD Semperon 3400 +, and Ubuntu on the 3100 +, and the other two are currently awaiting their orders.

I also have an old IBM PS/WHO? micro channel arcitchecture P.C. which I simply keep for reasons to perverse to adequately explain in writing.

When did you start using it?

2003 for windows xp. 2006 for Ubunutu

App Questions:
Which browser?

Firefox and IE8. Nothing else is really all that secure, IMO.

Email client?

Outlook 2007 and Thunderbird

Audio and video players?

too numerous to mention but right now, it's banshee on Ubuntu and Winamp on XP

Office progs (editors, etc.)?

Openoffice 2.4 on Ubuntu vs. Ultimate Office 2007 on XP. (But it's not like I care.)
What I really need is an excellent IDE for C ++, python, perl and html. I will learn to be a unix hippie one day even if it kills me.

Why do you run it?
winxp and win7- because as much as i hate microsoft they are just easier to use and i do tend to use mostly freeware or open source even on windows.
lubuntu- my netbook which is from the first generation atom processor because its hard to run winxp on it with a virus program at the same time so i figured id save myself the trouble plus i do like to just resetup systems.

When did you start using it? I can remember windows 3.1 but it wasnt my computer it was my father's and i was like approx. 5 years old.
