A friend of my got a computer that is a 64 bit core. I tried to install ubuntu 7.10 (both the 64 bit verison than the regular and neither worked). I than tried out Antix 7 and it worked, but it is a weak OS for a strong machine. Can I use the Ubuntu repos and install Ubuntu that way? Currently it is using debian repos.

have you tried downloading the Ubuntu .iso and burning it to disk, then booting from it?

yes, I even tried to using Dapper and Kubuntu, and no dice. I know once I accidently switch Debian to Ubuntu, but they were compatible kind of.

You give very little information. It might help if you know what components are in your machine; Feisty had a problem with geforce 8800 videocards, for example. Another thing I would ask is if you're trying to install to more than one hard drive; raid or lvm, for example. I'm also going to assume that you're trying to install from the live cd. Download the alternate install disc. You can find it on Ubuntu's website. It will install from a text environment instead of a graphical one, so it might seem confusing at first, but it's always worked well for me.

I am sorry for the little info, but I don't own the laptop. I know it is a dell. If I had more time with it I would try to use an alt install disc.
