I am posting on this forum because i am a windows user, however have an open mind for this post. I was wondering if anyone could give me one good incentive to switch to linux. Give me a reason that crushes windows, a reason to crush all reasons... sorry, but really, the option is there for me, but why go through the trouble of making the big switch?

keep in mind that i am a visual basic programmer, a gamer, and a mule.

Because you can generally fix things in linux on your own as opposed to waiting for MS or vendor to release a patch only to wonder what the hell you did :)

or

Cost of a MS Package...min of $100

Cost of a linux package....Free

Most are turned on by the savings - Linux free, as 99% of the applications for it.

There's no VB on *nix however, and gaming has a ways to go before being on par with the Windows experience. However gaming is coming along - the more popular titles are occaisionally ported, and there are apps to provide Win32 api interaction to allow for games & apps to play on *nix.

There are non commital ways to try it so you can see what the experience is like - Knoppix is a Linux distribution that you burn onto a CD, and boot from the CD. It creates a ram drive to load itself into so you can use it - more RAM the quicker it will respond obviously.

We can tell you of various issues, but it's seeing for yourself that will put things in better perspective.

Because all the cool kids are doing it!

Seriously though, it's nice to learn something completely new every once in a while. I've not had to learn a new OS from the ground up since I installed my first copy of Windows NT 3.51, and that wasn't really all that different from Windows. Linux is totally new.

Good one.

Because it is an OS based on an excellent design that has stood the test of time.

And better yet, because you can't do VB on it!

Gentoo is ambitious IMO.
The documentation is really good, though not something I'd recommend to someone with no experience - Fedora, SuSE, Mandrake you might want to look at if you Gentoo too challenging.

it is open source.

if you don't like that one, then try:
it costs 0 (zero) dollars -or-
linux is more versatile -or-
linux is more secure -or-
linux is more reliable -or-
linux gives you full control of your system
