Not to mention that they "plan" to release the source, but they've planned to release the source for Java too.
Almost forgot - they're running into problems from Novell with opening Solaris. Not sure how serious Novell is, but it looks like they might already try to sue them over it.
Regarding Java, I don't think I've ever seen someone from Sun say they were going to OSS Java. When was this? Like Solaris, they do have source for Java available under their own license. According to one of the guys at school, Blackdown is basically built from it (I haven't verified - just something he says).
Solaris 9 x86 was less than stellar, but was at least Solaris, so if you weren't familiar with the platform you could get used to it.
Yeah, the sysadmin at school says that Solaris 9 for Sun hardware was actually a decent upgrade - less memory and cpu utilization - but on Intel, it was a pretty big let down.
