Ok I thought it wouldn't be a big deal to get Open LDAP up and running on my server. Guess I was wrong as I am not able to to figure out how to get it installed. I have installed the prerequisite software in the latest version of BerkeleyDB and I have also installed the GDBM backend. However whenever I try and run configure here's what happens at the end:

command I use: env CPPFLAGS=-I/usr/local/BerkeleyDB.4.2/include \ LDFLAGS=-L/usr/local/BerkeleyDB.4.2/lib ./configure

Results towards the end:

checking for db.h... yes
checking for Berkeley DB link (default)... no
checking for Berkeley DB link (-ldb42)... no
checking for Berkeley DB link (-ldb-42)... no
checking for Berkeley DB link (-ldb-4.2)... no
checking for Berkeley DB link (-ldb-4-2)... no
checking for Berkeley DB link (-ldb-4)... no
checking for Berkeley DB link (-ldb4)... no
checking for Berkeley DB link (-ldb)... no
checking for Berkeley DB link (-ldb41)... no
checking for Berkeley DB link (-ldb-41)... no
checking for Berkeley DB link (-ldb-4.1)... no
checking for Berkeley DB link (-ldb-4-1)... no
checking for Berkeley DB link (-ldb3)... no
checking for Berkeley DB link (-ldb-3)... no
checking for Berkeley DB link (-ldb2)... no
checking for Berkeley DB link (-ldb-2)... no
checking for Berkeley DB link (-ldb1)... no
checking for Berkeley DB link (-ldb-1)... no
configure: error: BDB: BerkeleyDB not available

I don't know what to do and the HOWTO I found on tldp hasn't been much help either. IF you folks would help me out I'd appreciate it.

Well, I don't know squat about LDAP or Berkeley DB ... however, from your error message it is clear that the installer can't find the Berkeley DB.

Have you triple checked the path, to make sure that you are pointing it to the right place?
