Ok,
I've had it up to here <puts hand way above head> with morons at work going to sites and downloading crap on the PC's.

We have PC's that are so bogged down with crap like Bonzibuddy, ezula and other spy/adware that people are bitching and moaning that everything is slow.

So, since my boss is out and I'm bored I'd like to set up a proxy server or something that will allow us to filter sites to certain people.

Some people will need unrestricted access (Like I.S. :P ), some will need to go to most places, but I would like to filter illegal/inappropriate sites and sites that contain spy/adware.

Then others will need access to 1-5 sites. The rest get Nothing (Nothing Lebowski!).

Since I'm still not a Linux Guru, I'd like something that's not going to be too terribly difficult.

ATM, I'm looking at Wingate/Winproxy but they're expensive and will be hard to get the cheapska... I mean the administration team, to approve that kind of money.

So, I'm wondering what some good cheap (possibly free?) 'alt-os' based Proxies there are.

We are running almost all Windows PC's and have approx. 300 users. It must be STABLE and must allow VPN access.

Thanks.

Take a look at Squid or Middle Man. Or just search Freshmeat for "proxy".

Cool, thanks. I saw squid when googling 'proxies +linux'. I'll look at middle man and check Freshmeat.

Squid++

That's what I use. We only have 15 or so people, but it works. :)
