Here is how this little game is going to work.

Some one just sent me a dell machine with PIII era. Linux is getting installed on it.

Now Which version of linux will it be.

Here are the rules
It can not be slackware, or slackware based as i dont want to hear how i rigged this game.

But it can be any distro of Linux/BSD
Note so much a rule as a note that Gentoo is out of the question as of now as i dont have the time to deal with it . I would put vida linux it in place but have yet to find a mirror for it and there not enough people on BT to get it to me in a reasonable time.

Anything else is fair game.

Here's a VidaLinux mirror for you:

and

As far as distros are concerned, I've always been interested in DragonFly BSD, if you don't mind trying that out, otherwise, VidaLnux is probably where I'm interested in. Let me know how it goes.

Ok here is what going on

The Dell Dimension L500r got a nice 128meg upgrade to bring the system up to 192 megs of tam ( some reason my good samsung memory will not work even though it matches the specs for the memory on crucials site and also dells site) I did download and install VidaDesktop Linux which is just the latest Gentoo with a nice but wierd Anaconda installer.....

But this is what I do. Since a while ago i did recieve the free resource kit I will put Suse 9.1 pro from the dvd on this 633mhz book pc .... I will need time with it though as I will need to get a new ide cable for it and also add some ram to that machine also.

Now

If you have never tried a BSD distro I would suggest FreeBSD.

From your other posts u seem to know what you are doing so installing freebsd should be fairly simple for you. Also, I think you'll enjoy seeing the differences between the linux way and the bsd way. A good learning experience.

I installed freebsd and was able to replicate my linux desktop
(xfree, xfce, xmms, gkrellm, xbindkeys)

Or if you really want to do something crazy, install an unpatched version of XP and give it a public IP address, see how long it takes for the machine to get compromised.

LFS, you baby. Always whining about something. Slackware this, apt-get that. :)

I vote for the new OpenBSD release.

Not on our work network. If you install windows and have it plugged in to the network, you only have about 3mins when it first boots up to either unplug it or install the patch before you're getting the '60 seconds till reboot'.

I've been slowly weeding out all the OLD win98 computers which are all probably pretty infected.

Here at home, it's quite a different story. I'll have to try that and see how long it stays up. :)

Wow, that's scary... but high speed internal networks I'm sure are so much faster because of the limited IP addresses. A customer of mine told a story about a vendor infecting them with Nachi -- they were in her office and she was giving them a piece of her mind saying "do you know how fast it will spread?". Her main branch was already infected, and during their conversation they got a phone call from each branch asking what was going on.... it was less than 15 minutes before the entire organization was infected.
