I'm hoping you guys can help me with a problem.

I've not been able to get the Java Plugin for Linux in Firefox. It keeps saying that it successfully installs, but the next time I browse to a page that uses a Java applet, it prompts me to install the plugin.

I've also used apt-get to install the j2re package. Anyone have any ideas what else I can do to get Java working?

Which Java are you installing, and where are you installing it from?

You'll need a 1.4 java, definitely, easiest way is to download it from Sun. The way to "install" it is to make a symlink to the appropirate "libjavaplugin_oji.so" from your java install into the "plugins" directory for firefox.

yea...that symlink will burn you every time.

at a command console, I usually just go to my plugins directory under firefox and then link to the java plugin with a ln -s

Thanks guys..

That fixed the problem. I'd followed the instructions earlier, but mistyped the path to the java plugin when I created the symlink.

Mistying it is pretty easy to do. I'm sure we've all done that al last once.

Glad it worked out.

Tab completion ownz me.

Also, in my defense, why do they even have the stupid XPI Java plugin installer if it doesn't work? That's just dumb.
