Maximum PC

Hi all,
I'm going to be doing computational chemistry research this summer and i need to learn my way around linux as that is the prefered OS for this work. I downloaded and installed WUBI ubuntu on my home computer so I could play around with it.

I need to install a molecular modeling program named VMD but i don't know how to get it compiled. I read the README file and the 1st step is to rename the $install_library_dir and $install_bin_dir lines in the configure file. Currently I'm stuck on how to write the PATH variables. I googled it and editing the bashrc file was suggegested. So they say use this code:

I guess to answer your question, the way I've already used has been

PATH=$PATH:/usr/sbin/:/usr/local/bin

Obviously, you can add more by separating with a :

As a note, and to hopefully simplify this for you some..

$install_bin_dir already points to /usr/local/bin and install_library_dir points to install_library_dir="/usr/local/lib/

Which are directories that exist, so without any changes, it'll install there and is already in the path.

The documentation is a little vague in this respect, but it looks the only need to do this would be either a) You don't have any root privs on the default directory or b) you have a need to install multiple instances of the app.

Since this isn't a multi-user system, the first wouldn't be an issue. The second might be, but the way you're talking, I doubt that's the case either.

Just in case I would have to modify the PATH variables later, do I add to the bashrc file?

I'm supposed to learn my way around Linux using the command line so it's a bit confusing with some of the non-Windows jargon, etc. I'm not a programmer or familiar with all this

You could. and that would probably be easiest.

It's been a while since I've added one, but I believe you need to have it like this as it won't work with only the PATH= line.

PATH=$PATH:/home/user/bin
export PATH

You can always check your path to see what's included via

echo $PATH

According to the bash man page, .bash_profile is executed for login shells, while .bashrc is executed for interactive non-login shells. So you would probably want to put it in .bash_profile.

And don't worry, we were all Linux n00bs at one time or another. If I can learn to use a shell anyone can.

just another quick question:

I realized I wasn't running any firewall with WUBI like I did with windows. After I booted up in windows after running WUBI, the av found a trojan. COuld that have happened from using WUBI?

Any simple firewall/av solutions for me?

I've never really heard of an AV hitting on WUBI, but because of what it is, I suppose it could flag as something. What do you logs say about it?

FWIW, I'm not a big fan of the WUBI app myself and would probably be running linux in something like virtualbox or vmware if you don't want to reparition your system and just install it there.

and what's leading you to beleive that there's no firewall?

Well, poor choice of words but I think linux has its own firewall.

I guess it was a case of causation and correlation. I was running WUBI for an hour or so until my brother wanted to use the computer so i rebooted into XP. He tells me later that Avira AV found a trojan so...

That's why I asked it the way I did. Clearly you understand there's one there, now I'm really wondering why you even asked to begin with.
