I thought I’d learn some more about Linux in my spare time with a book titled “LINUX & UNIX Programming Tools”, but two of the questions I can’t answer.

1. What are hidden files? What are the names of the hidden files that are executed when you log on to a LINUX system?

2. Give a command line to display the types of all the files in the personal directory in your home directory whose filenames do not start with a, k, G, or Q and in which the third letter in the name is not a digit and not a letter (uppercase or lowercase).

If anyone could help me with this dang problem, I’d appreciate it.

Thanks

well, hidden files are there so you don't try to delete them. They are usually config and/or system files. Most of them have the ".file" name with that '.' in the front. You can see all your hidden files when you sign in as root.

if you want to see your hidden files, in the command line, type "ls -a" and it will display all of your files including hidden ones in the current directory.
