Maximum PC

Hi all, I installed ubuntu 9.10 about a month ago to do some testing/diagnosing of a problem I was having. I've since determined it is a hardware problem and the laptop needs to go back to the manufacturer for repairs.

So now I want to remove ubuntu, but I'm not entirely sure how to do it, I've read a few different methods.

Will this work:

Boot into Vista open the console and type fixmbr thus removing grub and reinstalling windows boot loader
Then Delete all ubuntu partitions through windows vista

Most of the methods I see mention deleting the Linux partions using the Vista install CD, and then going into recovery through the vista CD and doing the fixmbr command. Unfortunately I don't have a vista CD, just a recovery partition. Anyways since I can still boot to vista I'm wondering if the method I mentioned would work.

Supposedly this will work, but it never work when I try it. What I would do is just boot into Windows, Install EasyBCD, reformat the Ubuntu drive, and use EasyBCD to rewrite the BCD. It is important not to restart during this process.

Not only do you need to deal with the mbr, you also need to deal with bootmgr and ntldr, so there's more then just fixmbr.

If you have a bootable Vista partition, then EasyBCD is the way to go. Alternatively, I suppose you can use bootrec while in Vista.

I would highly recommend that you do not remove the linux partitions until you're absolutely certain that you're no longer using grub as a bootloader. What's on the MBR itself is nothing more then a shortcut (for a lack of terms) that points back to bits in the Ubuntu installation and you certainly don't want to leave yourself unable to boot either OS before you made the appropriate changes.

Once you have that done, you should be able to remove the partitions through disk manager

You can install Unbunu from within Windows: http://wubi-installer.org/

If you want to uninstall, you can then be able to just go to the control panel and uninstall Ubuntu.

It worked fine for me.

That's because you installed using Wubi...this guy didn't...

I should have installed using Wubi, I realized after the fact that I could.
