Due to kids or wife my harddrive upped and died from smart drive failure. Until I can purchase a new harddrive (after christmas) I am using Xubuntu from my jump drive. It is being used as a harddrive, but how can I get it to run faster. I have 2G of ram, but it is not being used. How can I use the 2G ram to my advantage?

IMO

Boot a Live CD and use the USB to save any files you need to save.

This.

The live cd boot is slow as shit but once running you will take advantage of the 2GB system ram as a ramdrive and all programs/processes will run straight from memory. With the USB system you are using I don't think that everything is run from memory so you have the lag of reading and writing system information across the USB controller.

Heck...if you went as far as using the USB stick, why not just install on the USB HD?

At least then you can get around the clunkiness of the LiveCD.

I am on a tight budget until after christmas. I only have an 8 gig usb stick. I needed to have installed permanent w32codecs as well have my email permanent. I have limited time on the computer.
