earlier I posted this thread

http://www.maximumpc.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=92651

and it worked great, but ever since I upgraded to the latest version of Ubuntu I get this error every time I start an RMVB

"Could not open required DirectShow codec drv4.so.6.0."

the thing is, the video still plays fine. it just that this error pops up whenever I start playing a video

it's a very minor annoyance but if anyone can help me out I would appreciate it

You working with mplayer and if so, have you tried to play it in something else?

wow I never thought to do that since no other player was capable of doing it before. but it seems VLC plays it just fine. which is very odd since it never could before and still doesn't in Windows

oh well, minor problem solved

glad that worked.

I'd think there's a .<application> folder (.mplayer maybe, I don't run that, so I'm not sure) somewhere in your home directory related to mplayer that needs to be removed and recreated via the application.
