hi guys,
i´m having a weird problem with USB storage devices, be it a memory stick or a camera, whatever,

when i plug it in, windows knows it´s there since i can see the "remove hardware" icon popping up, but if i go into My Computer, Word or any other program it does not show up.

on a different PC if i plug it in it immediately shows up on my computer. not on this one.

it only happens with storage devices, other USB components, like mice, or game controllers are found and operate normally.

it´s winXP sp1

any ideas? it´s driving me mad, first time i see this happening.
thanks,
Diego

hmmm,
These steps are based off of the assumption that you are using some sort of storage card reader or a usb flash drive type device....

ok these may seem like silly things but:
1) Have you tried multiple USB ports?

2) Are you networked? If so - do you have any mapped drives?

I've seen this alot when there is a mapped drive at the next available drive letter - so Windows can't assign it.

Even if you aren't mapping drives - try opening My computer, going to the tools menu, choose Disconnect Network Drive, and see if it shows any 'ghosted' drives...
What I mean by this (just in case you aren't familiar with it) is:
Lets say you have the following Config:
Floppy - A:
HDD - C:
HDD 2 - D:
CD-Rom - E:
CD-Rom 2 - F:
Network mapped drive G: (or anything else that might be stealing G:)

When you plug in your USB Storage device - it will assign it the next drive letter after your attached storage (that is G: in this case) - if there is a network mapped drive there already - the usb drive won't show up.

Also - you can Check Disk Management to ensure somethings not ghosting on drive G:

Lastly (of what I can think of atm)

Look in Device Manager and see if it shows up as a USB Mass Storage Device - does it have an error? check it out and see if it gives any other details...

Let me know -
Tuathal

OH - one other thing you said WinXP SP1 - you sure its not SP2 right? The Windows Firewall in SP2 can block USB storage devices....
