I'm planning on reinstalling my Windows XP OS in the next month or so. I have (or will have) backed up all my bookmarks and other data. My question has to do with drivers and firmware.

After reinstalling windows, do I need to install drivers for the Intel chipset, or will the previous ones still be there. My DVD rom and DVD burner have firmware updates installed - will I need to reinstall updates, or will they still be there?

When I install (or reinstall) drivers for my video card and sound card, does it matter what order I do that in?

You will have to install all drivers.. Install the chipset drivers first. The firmware updates you did are in the rom chips of the dvd and dvd burner so they will not change.

Yes you will have to download and install all the latest drivers for your motherboard, videocard and if you have one soundcard too.

Optical drives have a small memory chip that does not need to be re-updated because it uses flash memory. Just like your motherboards BIOS.
NOTE: Your motherboards BIOS is NOT its chipset drivers. Whole different ends of the matter.

Does it matter in what order I install the drivers? Also, should I unplug the speakers, printer, and scanner before re-installing windows?

Install the chipset drivers first, just like I said before, the video next and sound last. The sound and video really don't make a lot of difference but I like my video next.

Speakers, it doesn't matter.
