Hello. I just had a friend of mine call who is unable to successfully log onto his computer. On the login screen, he enters his password - which he tells me he has not forgotten and has been using for some time - and Windows begins to load. However, just before getting to the Desktop the computer logs off and brings him back to the login screen.

Any suggestions or ideas would be most helpful as I've never run into this problem before.

did you frien tell you that this problem happen all of a sudden? ask him what was he doing on his comp before this happen. what operating system is he using? if he is using winxp, tell him to boot with his cd and choose repair on the main console. afterwards when he gets to the black screen, tell him to type in "chkdsk /r" without the "". i dont know if this will help but its good to try. also tell him to boot up in safe mode if he can.

Just a thought, but I suspect he's getting something telling him about the license manager between trying to logi n and logging out.

And getting that could've happened from a variety of reasons.

Only solution I know of for that is to reinstall.

Can he log in as administrator?? Tell him to try this. He can make password changes then.

usually its just accidentally leaving the caps lock key on. but that cant be it if windows is loading.

Seems likely some program is causing mischief, tell him to boot in safe mode with F8.

Before he consideres a re-install it may be a good idea to just get a password changer like ERD commander or whatever featured in this months MPC.
