NEWS

U.S. District Court Judge Leonie Brinkema of Virginia has decided that Geico has the right to sue search companies Google and Overture Services (owned by Yahoo!) for trademark infringement. The insurance company alleges that the search companies have used its trademarks as keywords for advertisements sold to third-parties.

Geico filed the lawsuit in May, and Google responded by disputing Geico's claims and filing for the case to be thrown out. Both sides cited past cases in their attempt to show the legitimacy of their case, but the judge said that Geico's reasoning was better. The judge also said that Geico has enough facts to back up its contention, which means that the process leading up to a trial can now begin.

The results of this case could have a large effect on the future of search companies, since keyword-based ad sales/display functions are paramount to their revenues. In fact, Google already faces similar charges from another company.

All right, where is the Clue Stick, Geico needs a few wacks.

OT - Has anyone actually saved money with Geico? I've always found that they are a couple hundred dollars more expensive than my insurance company (Farmers).

I have. Of course I'd never use Farmers, so they may be even cheaper. But like I said.... I wouldn't know because they suck and are not worth looking into where I live.

I wouldn't bother with their insurance, but I'd love to get my hands on the critter that does their ads. :D

I have never been in an accident so I haven't witnessed their claims process first hand. But my grandparents home burned down a few winters ago and a Farmers agent was there before the fire was even out with a check for $5000 for living expenses until the claim could be settled/house rebuilt.
