I am trying to install xp home on computer for my brother-in-law. It is a fresh install and I used the Seagate utl disk that came with the drive to fromat.

When I put the xp install disk in it loads some files (about 10sec worth) and then says: setupdd.sys could not be loaded error code 4.

Then if I let it reboot and try and boot from the cd it says ntldr is missing.

I am trying to get this done by tonight so he can take it with him college so I need help asap.

thanks,

radbrad

p.s. when did the forum move, I haven't been around in awhile

How large is the drive? You might want to attempt another re-install and delete all existing partitions.

that usually happens when there's a floppy disk in the drive, or other unbootable devices.

It happens when the OS is not completely installed. Ntldr is the boot loader for XP - if the install didn't finish, it isn't there (on the HDD).

I wanted him to check hardware so we could see if what he has is incompatable with XP.

Then we could move on to loooking at specific parts (like a HDD with a bad boot sector)
