So I'm building a new HTPC system and was wondering if there is any major advatange of going with Win 8.1 over Windows 7. I have both licenses to choose from (spare OEM copies that I haven't installed on any machines yet...)

Both are the non-pro versions, but I think they both have multimedia functionality. I also remember someome telling me that Win8 used slightly less resources than Windows 7?? Anyway, I don't have a touch screen either, so that's not a decision point.

Any suggestions? I do have a lot of ripped Blu-Rays in raw form (not compressed) that I'd like to be able to play, so if that persuades any suggestions...

Resources won't matter, the computer can comfortably live on 2GB for both. However, Windows 8 needs a bit of work to get Windows Media Center, if that's your 10 foot interface of choice.

Win7

Only Win8.1 Pro has MC. You can either buy a upgrade Win8. to 8.1 Pro with MC or if you have Pro purchase MC from MS Store.

So it seems to me that Win7 makes more sense for you.

Blu-Ray playback presents its own issues if using a PC BR drive and will require a 3rd party playback app. Also potentially some hardware issues (ex: HDCP) that some of these 3rd party apps get around.
