Basically I want to set my PC up to function like a Xbox one with voice commands. If I walk into my room and say "PC on" it will wake from sleep or standby mode. I'd like to be able to open some programs like the multitude of games I have and other office software like MS office products. Not to forget controlling media player and telling it to play certain songs or playlists (if this level of control is possible through voice commands). I believe most of what I want to do is possible but I have no idea where to start.

Windows has has voice dictation (and a rather good one at that ) since Vista. It has a bit of a learning curve though, but the tutorial (trainer) you go through is pretty good at teaching you what you need to know. You can access this at Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Speech Recognition

However, turning the computer on from sleep is impossible unless you jerryrig something.
