Windows XP SP2 has finally been released!

Currently only the network installer (aka the business version) is available weighing in at 266MB! This version is designed to update all XP pro systems including home, pro, media center, tablet pc, etc and to be used in business environments by IT Professionals.

Soon there will be a consumer version put out on the windows update site as well as thru the automatic update service. I'd suggest home users just wait for this to become available as the network installer is very very very big!

You can read all about SP2 here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/winxpsp2.mspx

So please share both your successes and failures in this thread for others to read about.

I'm still downloading the thing (I have dialup  ) But soon as I do it's getting loaded onto every machine in my house.

I can't wait. I'm glad to see all the new features and security changes. I just hope they do make a differenece and help slow the tide of problems out there...

just minor issues, like having to open some ports to let some applications work.

I haven't had any problems. I put it on my test machine and my personal laptop. I have about 20 machines at work running xp and I hope to have it all scoped out by the 16th when I heard it goes live on AU.

Maybe I did something wrong....but it just crashed my notebook. Ran the update, computer restarted, it would show the "windows XP" loading screen and then flash the background....before restarting again. I let it do this for about 1/2 hour. Now trying to restore from the windows cd.....<prays>

everything's been fine for me ... only annoyances ive had is that it tries to require you to have some sort of antivirus, but u can turn that off. also, the popup blocker notification when it blocks a pop-up is kinda annoying, that can be turned off too tho.

I downloaded the file in just over 9 minutes. Installed pretty fast(3.6Ghz, 1gig HyperX, Raptor RAID 0). I haven't had any problems with programs or anything. Turned off the "no anti-virus program warning". All is well so far.

Yup, completely boinked my Alienware notebook. Had to reinstall windows. SP2 worked fine the second time though.

Now I got to start reloading everything. Its going to be a long night.

Also, Alienware's "Master Disk" with the drivers is a JOKE. I had to download two drivers (one for ATI, the other for the PCMCIA) and I still can't get my Network driver to install. Gonna have to make a phone call....

After installing SP2, I kept getting EL99X errors in my System Event Log referring to "DMA download engine failure." My network connectivity would also drop, and the system would freeze for a few seconds. It culminated in a BSOD which Microsoft's error reporting followup suggested might be caused by a device driver.

I downloaded the latest 3Com drivers for my network cards (they're both 3CR990SVR97 types) on another machine, then updated the drivers.

All has been well since doing that (other than opening a few ports for my apps.

Installed SP2 last night thanks to a copy of the file thoughtfully provided by a friend with bradband.

Works good. . .it seems to have fixed the intermittent error I was getting with the display driver for my 6800 ultra, which would crash or reboot the system sometimes. Otherwise the only thing I noticed was Style XP needed an update. Even after the update tho, the window colors in some of the styles are different. There are other graphical anomalies like the menus in the tree pane of PD Explorer 5 look a little weird as well. Otherwise the system is stable, and seems a little faster than it was.

I liked how the system auto recognized McAfee AV and FW and didn't bug me about those options. Like others have said, other "features" of the new "secure" Windows are easily turned off (I didn't like how OE decided to stop downloading images in my E-mails, for instance). The new Windows Update has the same functionality of the old one, but looks cooler. In spite of the dire warning against it, stuff seems to download faster as well.

I'm just glad it didn't bork my machine. I haven't backed up my files in a while. . .

I love this feature. No more inadvertently validating SPAM via your email address because of some invisible GIF that gets downloaded...
