the option under Effects in the Display properties for Windows XP. i was wondering if this thing is a resource hog or not, as i remember reading somewhere about actually turning the font smoothing option completely off.

i kinda like the way it makes text look.

I turned all that junk off on mine (shaded menus, cleartype fonts, etc) and I didnt really notice much difference in performance on mine. So I turned it all back on since I liked the way it looked better.

I have an AMD XP @1.73GHz adn 512MB RAM and a GF2 ultra...

I think it's a form of Anti-Aliasing, so I'm sure it requires *some* processing time, but I don't think it's much. It's one of the few things I have enabled. Under the 'Performance' tab, I have most things unchecked.
The fading menu's seem to require the most power that I've noticed.

In general, if you have over a 1GHz Processor, 256Mb Memory, and a 32Mb Graphics card, you won't see much difference in performance by killing off the eye candy.

If you have slower than that, oh yeah. Big difference. :)
