Microsoft's stance as always been to not hack the registry unless there is no other way to make the change.

Before you make any changes to the registry you should back up the registry. Here is how to do it for XP, straight from Microsoft

WinGuides is a great site to find out what the registry hack is to accomplish a specific task.

TweakUI will make a lot of registry changes for you instead of you having to dig through the registry.

All that said, Registry Hacks are fine as long as you know what you're doing and what the expected effect will be.

It could be a disaster. But if your smart enough, you can easily export your registry that way you have a backup one. System restore point is also a smart idea. Then hack away with whatever you feel like tweakin' if carefull.
