1) Where to download it?

2) How to install it?

3) What to do to prepare my XP Home notebook which has Norton AV installed?

4) What can possibly be different between RC2 and the actual released version?

5) Will Windows Updates work with it for new critical updates if I'm using the RC, or will it pester me forever to install the final version?

THANKS!

1) Where to download it?

If you have SP2 RC1 installed, windowsupdate should have it. Otherwise Microsoft download section has it. If not, search function is there for your help.

2) How to install it?

Make sure all programs aren't running, Use Task Manager to close out any unecessary programs. Disable any antivirus you might be running. Make sure you do a system restore point. Either Windowsupdate will run it automatically, or if you downloaded it, have to run the setup file.

3) What to do to prepare my XP Home notebook which has Norton AV installed?

Rightclick the norton icon on your taskbar, and disable. Or just Taskmanager and endtask the norton proggie.

4) What can possibly be different between RC2 and the actual released version?

LOTS. By installing this beta pack, you know this isn't the final product, so be aware of any bugs.

5) Will Windows Updates work with it for new critical updates if I'm using the RC, or will it pester me forever to install the final version?

Windows update will work and install new critical stuff they add. As long as your using a legit cd-key, you will gain access to Windowsupdate. Otherwise if your an unlucky individual with a banned key, you'll have to call microsoft for a new key if your using a corporate copy.

Woot. Thx for the 411. I did scour MS's website for the RC2 download but all I cam up with was this approx. 250MB network install package. Can I use that?

I have Windows XP Pro Version 2002 with SP2 installed.

My system indicates: Service Pack2, v.2149

No reference to RC1 or 2???

I've heard that the new service pack has a 'feature' of not shutting down until it has finished downloading updates. Can anyone verify that?

That was the RC 1 release. I used RC2 for a couple months without any problems other than the Security Center not recognizing Zone Alarm or NAV. I disabled it. I'm a pretty light weight user though.

To try the single user version you have to go to the beta download site and install the Beta Update software first. Then you can download RC2. For me the installation was problem free. The final release is so close, I'm not sure you want to download a beta you will remove in a few weeks. Here is the link for the Beta Update download.

This link will tell you all you want to know and more. :D

AFAIK .2149 is the most recently Public Beta I believe you are correct that builds .216x and .218x may indeed be out there but they are only supposed to be available to specific members of a specific Beta Test group right now.

Latest news for those of you who are watching the SP2 release timeline. Looks like we'll be seeing the final version very soon.

Here's a smidge of speculation as well as some more official news.

As always, Google's news bot is a nice way to get the lastest information.

Definitely going to be interesting to see how well Microsoft has done (at least, for those of us who haven't had the opportunity to check out the release candidates).
