I'd scan for viruses. That can really slow things down.
Is your shift key stuck? If you tap it repeatedly, it will usually unstick.

If you spent money on a custom build, you overspent if you're having performance issue on that machine.

Boot up times are not really that important- it means you are loading up more stuff.
I'd say you will see a great boot up improvement if you could upgrade your home pc to a true sata III ssd, like a samsung 64gb 830 series-which is pretty cheap these days.

Typical boot time for Windows 7 is 45 seconds from start to "hard drive stops doing something". If your home computer takes a full two minutes, you obviously have crap on your computer that's slowing it down.

It depends. My Athalon x2 system takes about one and a half minutes to boot to the login screen, and about 5 minutes until when the hard drive stops doing stuff after login. It becomes usable about 20 seconds after login.
By comparison, a Core 2 Duo laptop I have takes about one minute to boot, and becomes usable 15 seconds after login. These systems are both clean and normal.
An i5 system I build is in between the two, time wise.
It really depends on the hardware.

This is why I said typical... though I'd worry about you too. I had an T8600 laptop and it boot into Windows 7 usable within a minute or less. Did you do an msconfig scrub?

It also depends what security you are running. Panda Security can slow your boots by 2 minutes, while ESET did closer to 30 seconds. I wouldn't worry about my systems, because they aren't using SSDs for the boot drive.
