My OS is XP Home SP3.
Is it possible to have a Windows login password where something like OphCrack will fail to reveal it?
I use TrueCrypt file containers for sensitive data, but I'm not interested in encrypting my entire C: partition.

No matter what I use for a password, OphCrack coughs it up in less than two minutes.
I think I'll just use the password to keep out nosy family members (it's obvious to me now that anyone who really wants to get into my drive would be able to do so easily), and the sensitive stuff will continue to be put in the TrueCrypt volumes.

UPDATE: Turns out that OphCrack chokes on passwords longer than 14 characters long. So does my brain LOL.

I'd worry more about your nosy family members.

If you really want a secure password, find a memorable quote that you know, salt it with some leet speak, and call it a day.

If someone has physical access, enough knowledge, and enough determination it's pretty much game over, no matter what you do (yes, full drive encryption will raise the bar considerably, but someone can get around it).

Let's hope they aren't the least bit computer saavy.

The best password is a BIOS password.

Your password could be 1000 characters long, Capitols, Numbers, Special and foreign characters. Cake for linux.

Bios PW... pretty secure.

I think there are exploits in XP, considering I haven't heard the same trick works on Vista or 7. But I could be wrong!

And I follow the basic principal of the XKCD comic: find a memorable quote that's 20+ characters long. I tend to salt mine with punctuation marks and numbers were possible.

Linux computers can be opened in similar ways as Windows can be.

*nix's only "inherit" security was it's pioneering use of ACLs and admin elevation for certain tasks. Otherwise, I don't see it having any more advantage than Windows (and even less so, given that Windows has adopted *nix like security features) given the same user, barring malware compatibility.
