Ok, win7 is driving me nutz. I have a 200 gig hard drive with win7 on one partition (39 gigs) and nothing on the other (147 gigs). I want to extend the win partition into the empty partition to make it one whole hard drive partition. The extend option is greyed out when I right click, so I tried the diskpart command in the cmd prompt to extend the win partition and that failed.

How the hell do you do it? I am upgrading an old pc for a friend. I don't want to delete the partitions if I don't have to...I am just about to do that anyway if someone can't come up with an answer.

Use gparted. Delete the 147 GB partition, and then resize the 39GB partition.

yea...you're going to have to either remove the 147 gig

or shrink the 147 gig and then move it, so there's empty space between the end of the 39 gig and the beginning of what's left of the 147 gig.

gparted will actually require you to do it the same way.

Honestly, I'm not sure I've ever seen a tool like this..and I go back to using partition magic....actually expand a primary partition by taking space from an extended partition on the fly.

I finally got the primary partition to expand into the "D" partition by deleting the "D" partition first, it cannot be formatted. I used win7s disk-manager to do it.

Thanks for the help guys....
