I'm going to be putting a new SSD drive on my laptop. I want to avoid all the extra stuff that windows tends to put
on the drive.

As far as I can see, I may need the folders: Program Files, Program files X, Windows, Program Data, and possibly Appdata.
Can I get away with just these folders or even less? What I'm aiming at is a clean minimum install of the WIN 7 OS 64 bit on the SSD drive.

Possibly I can move Program files over to the next physical drive and eliminate even more. Can someone help on this?

Overall, what must I put on the C boot drive. I'm really looking ahead to future re-installs. Trying to make it easier.

For example, if I could put windows only on the boot drive, I'd be very happy. Don't know if that's really possible.

Any and all suggestions are very welcome and thanks for your help.

You can move those over, but what you can do probably shouldn't

Install Win7, let all those native folders exist, and go with that. Windows7 runs fine w/ 60G's max, but it's the documents that grow. Videos and Music take up a mess of space so point those to somewhere else. Might as well do Downloads as well. Sounds like a laptop, so where would you point those toward?

Thanks for the suggestions. I have a laptop that will accept 2 internal hard drives. I figured that putting the OS on one and everything else on the second physical drive would avoid some of the issues when I have to re-install the OS later.

The URL referenced is quite thorough, and I'm glad to have it. Looks like I'll put more on the C: drive than I had counted in.

The way the PC is set up is an Intel 120 gig SSD and a 750 meg Black Scorpio drive for the second physical drive.
The Laptop is an ASUS N71JQ with 8 megs of ram with Win 7 SP1 64 bit.

I plan on wiping the OS drive and starting in with a retail install of WIN 7 Ultimate so I'm not limited in moving to another machine later.

Hope this makes it a bit clearer on what I'm trying to do.

Ed.

Also for games and any other programs are symbolic links. This allows you to have your programs on another hard disk easily. This is how I set up my games on another drive. Works flawlessly.
