I've never tried using the Remote Desktop Connection in Win7. Is it safe to use over a home-based network for remote admin of computers without keyboards or monitors???

It's that or I have to find a paid solution ,or just buy a monitor and keyboard (which I think is a waste since the computer I'm trying to connect to I only need to administer it maybe once per month to do random maintenance work that the computer can't do on its own--restarts, etc).

Additionally, can you connect to a computer that has booted, but is still at the log-in screen waiting for a login?

Absolutely, RDC is a great way to establish a connection to another Windows PC that you have permissions on. You will need an account on the remote PC to be able to connect to it via RDC, assuming you're on a workgroup setup. It would be different on a domain.

OK, but it's not that easy to hack (say, if someone got onto my network but still didn't know the password to the user accounts on the target computer). I don't transfer anything of sensitive value over the network... I just mainly will use it (or plan to use it) to admin the server so I don't have to waste another $100 on a second monitor and keyboard which I would only end up using maybe once per month, if that.

Bro, you are worried about all the wrong things.

If somebody gets into your network, remote desktop is the least of your worries. You can't transfer stuff over remote desktop anyway.

Yes you can. On the default RDC screen select "Options", then under the "Local Resources" tab select the resources you want to have access to on the remote machine.
