Yes, it's a trivial question and usually I'd search on Google for the answer.

However, after many minutes of searching, this is the farthest I get:

"The HOSTS file format is the same as the format for host tables in the Version 4.3 Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) UNIX /etc/hosts file.", from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc751132.aspx

Can someone point me to a URL or just a short paragraph on why it's such a big deal for the hosts file to be "hosts" and not "hosts.txt" ? Thanks for your time.

its a name. "hosts" <> "hosts.txt" <> "host.exe" <> "hosts.dll" <>"hosts.wtf"

call it anything you want but it needs to be consistent so programs can find it. windows stayed with "hosts"

So assume that a .txt file wasn't associated with notepad, or any other editor for the reason, would you still be asking the question?

If you must know, the .txt version is reserved via the RFC

Perhaps a read of the wiki on the hosts file would answer this...
