Hey

i think i'm just not getting the right keywords for Search .. and google, getting alot of useless search results.. so figured i might as well start a thread about this while i continue on with my Search.

So i am about to wipe/format/clean install my OS Partition.. C drive.

its about 49gb, its been dedicated to all OS-related stuff.. like drivers, 3rd party drivers, Web browser plugins, clients.. etc.
I'm fine with wiping all this.

My 2nd partition on this same harddrive is the D drive.

its about 185gb. Now this has been the drive i dedicated to all "Programs/Software/Games" .. like the fatass Steam folder, Adobe collection, etc.

Now if i format the OS drive, reinstall the same Windows 7 64bit Pro OS back in, will everything in my 2nd partition D drive, work fine?
Is there any "shortcut" to "re-update the registry" in this new OS install, so that all my D drive apps/software/games will show up in the new installed Start-Menu, Search, etc... ?

Afterall, the file paths appears to have no changes, it will still be a "D:\Adobe\Adobe CS5\Photoshop" and the same "C:\Windows\System32\" ...

or will formatting this OS partition pretty much mean i might as well format the D partition too? and reinstall everything over which will take like 40hours? ;o

I can't speak for Win7, but when I did this two weeks ago with XP, I reformatted my C: boot partition (50GB) and no data on the other 100GB partition (G: for me) was harmed at all. But wiping everything on the C: partition did mean that I had to reinstall everything from scratch... it took me a week.

Whether someone has tried what you propose via backing up the Registry first, I hope they chime in.
