Anyone know if it's possible to dual boot a computer (or laptop for that matter) with Windows XP Pro and an OEM copy (OEM as in Dell OEM) of Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

The Windows XP version I have is bootable and is a full copy (not an upgrade). Reason for asking is that my laptop can't run XP Mode (because it technically doesn't support Virtualization, and even with MS's patch, it would run painfully slow) and I don't really want to go out and buy another copy of Win7 Pro either. (The computer has a Pentium Dual Core SU4100 low-power dual core that runs around 1.3 Ghz).

I would mainly use the XP install for doing software testing (like testing websites and software). The computer also came with Win7 Home Premium 64-bit, but I was able to find some drivers for WinXP Pro, so drivers aren't an issue.

Any suggestions?

Additionally (if this is an issue and if people can offer advice) I'd like the machine to boot to Win7 by default unless a keystroke or menu item is selected within a certain period of time (like 15 seconds during boot-up).

Sort of like how bootloaders work with dual-boot Windows/Linux machines using bootloaders like grub and lilo.

XP Pro has a 64 bit version. When you start to load XP, it will ask you if you want to dual boot. All of that is done with the boot.ini file on the root of the C: drive.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input. The version of XP I have is only a 32-bit version, though, and from what I know, XP-64 bit had some issues (and that's why MS didn't really push it too much... that and by the time that people caught onto 64-bit, Vista was released). I guess, though, if I was going to spend money, I'd just end up buying Win7 Pro 64-bit (the OEM version which costs as much as Windows XP does now, so around $150). I just don't want to spend money on an OS that Microsoft will stop supporting in 6 months. I'd like to use what copies of XP I have available (which is 2 of them, 1 is a Home Edition upgrade, one of the original releases, and the other is the bootable copy of XP I mentioned above).

OEM is just the license type of the operating system, it has no effect on dual booting or installation.

Just install XP first and then Windows 7. It isn't hard at all to get the two OS's together. Just make sure you have two partitions and don't install within the same one.

If you need help, here are some really detailed instructions.

I take it that Win7 will then install a customizable boot where I can choose which OS to load at start-up? Or does it just add an entry into the boot.ini file on the primary partition?

(I haven't dual booted a Win7 machine yet, hence my asking, but I do remember with Win98 and WinME dual-booted, you would get a boot menu).

Windows 7 will override the MBR and will let you choose which OS to use.

There is a way to choose which one by default, but I can't remember how off the top of my head (I haven't dual booted XP/7 in a while).
