Hello
I am putting dates in Excel 2010 and, within excel, the data does not provide any problems. I can change the format of the date in any which way I please and it stays as the correct date, but if I change it to text or general number format, it changes to a seemingly random number. This is a problem because, in mail-merge with Word 2010 the dates are showing up as a string of numbers. E.G. March 14, 2011 or 3/14/2011 or 3-14-11 etc. will always change to 40616. Other dates also change to other specific consistent numbers, but in the end, they all change. There seems to be some correlation, because if I put 40616 in an empty cell then change the number format to date it will change it to March 14, 2011 (or whatever other date format I specify). The same mail-merge problem doesn't occur with other number formats (like currency, plain numbers, etc) and it doesn't occur if I put a date in a Word mail merge file and merge from that.

I am on Windows 7 Pro SP1.
Please help (or direct me to the right forum if this isn't the place to be)

Thanks in advance,
Mukarram

I'm not sure I understand why you are changing the date to text or general number? Since they are dates, wouldn't you want to keep them as such?

I just tried a mail merge using a simple two-column list with a date and I had no problems with the date.

I only changed it to see if the number would stay the same if I did.

Its working now. I am not exactly sure what fixed it, but I ran Windows Update and restarted the computer. Also, it occurs to me that, while I was trying it at first, both programs, Excel and Word, were open the first time. I doubt that would have any effect, but when it did work, I had Excel closed.
