Anyone know of any good Step-By-Step articles on how to install Windows XP (Pro) from a USB flash drive on an older computer (in particular, an older P3 - 1GHz computer)?

I finally found a copy of WinXP that I thought I had given away, so I want to try to install this on an old P3 computer I have to turn it into a little file server/print server for my home network.

This looks like it would help.

I've used the advanced method the person mentions as well as the program. The program is much easier.

Here's another thought I had and need some advice.

Can I just format the drive, plug it into another computer, copy the contents of the Windows CD onto the drive, and then use a bootable floppy do start the installer?

I'm beginning to think (after playing around with the PC and doing research) that it can only boot to USB floppy and USB Zip drives, but not flash drives or USB optical drives, as I've tried many times without luck.

Obviously, I wouldn't reformat the drive (if I can get away with it) or is this not an option in XP. I know in Win2k you could do this (at least, with the upgrade disks you could). I have a bootable OEM copy of XP, though.

well I found a slightly used CD-ROM drive for the computer online (like $10). So we'll see what happens... if it doesn't end up working, then I'll just ditch the computer and find a gently used one. But it it works with the replacement CD drive, then that will be good.

Basically, I didn't want to have to spend a lot of money trying to get this going.... but I'm finding that I'm spending a decent amount of TIME trying to get things worked out, so basically the CD drive is like my last resort before I consider just traying the entire system (which couldn't be worth more than $25 or so).

So we'll have to see... The main reason for all this trouble is because I need a print server for (2) USB-connected printers and (1) Parallel connected printer, and I didn't really want ot use a higher-power computer (like a P4) since this computer would pretty much be on al lof the time (the computer I'm trying to get working is a SFF HP computer that only uses about 60 watts of power, if that).
