I have a game called Metal Knight: Mission Terminate Resistance that is from about 1999 I believe. It will not install on Vista or 7 computer for some reason, the installer always says that language.cad isn't on the disc, even though it is there. The game will only install on a Windows XP system, but I do not have any of those in my house anymore. I tried virtual machines a few years ago but they could not play games at all. Is there any good VM's out now that I could play this game on?

If you have Win7 then try out XP Mode.

It's free so give it a try.

It says that XP mode isn't supported on my edition of windows. I have home premium x64.

XP Mode requires Professional or better.

VMs don't typically play games well. I suppose you could try one of VM Wares products. They tend to be ahead of the curve.

That said, you might be able to use an XP VPC to install the game and then copy the files over to your main machine and run it in a comparability mode?

I'm trying it right now on my desktop. On my laptop it told me the windows edition wasn't correct, which was odd. I have SP1 on both as well.

Edit: it still tells me my version of windows isn't supported.

Virtualbox is the only VM that I know that supports 3D acceleration, XP mode does not.

I heard virtualbox recently improved USB passthrough as well - USB dongles and hardware can now attach to VM's. Very cool.

From my experience, VMWare has some pretty decent acceleration drivers, and is generally more stable (for me, anyway) than VBox
