I have an older laptop I'm going to give away and would like to wipe the hard drive before doing so, if possible. The laptop contains only one hard drive (C:). Is it possible to wipe the drive containing the operating system? If so, how and what software would I use to do this?

Thanks in advance.

Yes. Look up writing zeros for your OS (XP?) and you're pretty safe. You can do DoD level write/rewrite, but I don't think the buyer is going to hex edit the crap out of you for data. I'd just do a full format and feel fine, but it's safe to be paranoid and write zero's. There's more tech savy here, but I can't do this from within the single drive in the laptop and need to pop the drive out to do it in another computer.

Did you give away a working laptop though (i.e. w/o and OS)? If it has to have the OS, it can get tricky.

What about using a Live Linux CD that doesn't install anything on the hard drive and then using that to format the drive?

Yes...dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=4096 in a terminal should do the trick there...

I don't remember if gparted has a function in there to just write zeros or not, but one can certainly remove/create partitions with that.

Just an ounce of prevention, but make sure that there isn't anything needed on that HD like a recovery partition before you start wiping it.

Furball, I'll do you one better:

Code:
dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/sda bs=4096

When I give a computer away I format the hard drive seven times using the hard drive manufactures utility to do so. Now that scrambles the be-Jesus out of it for sure.

I doubt it. At least not a determined individual.

Thanks homies! Just needed a simple wipe. Hard drive doesn't contain any "Top Secret" files. Well, maybe some pics of me practicing Ninjutsu and "flexing" in the nude while all oiled up. Those pics of my rooster using a "certain" body part as a perch are pretty kick-ass, too! Cock-a-doodle-doo! Nope, can't let those fall into the wrong hands!

By the way, what do those codes you guys wrote mean? dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/sda bs=4096

Again, thanks for the input!

Think of what I posted to be writing zeros to a HD, and what Crash posted just writes random data instead of zeros to the drive. Both effectively do the same thing.

Googleing the command should give you a lot more insight.
