I have Windows 7 x64 Professional. I love the convenience of not having to log in every time I want to use my computer. However, my awesome rig keeps getting abused by my family for Facebook and word processing. I can't physically kick anyone off. I need to use the rig for school and play, and have every right to it, as the entire rig is wholly paid for and owned by me. I want to lock them out on the fly to prevent my rig from having to endure this tragedy. Restarts should not restore access to the desktop. There's another geek in the house that will probably be able to circumvent the standard procedure, too. :(

Logging off your account and forcing them to use their own lower level accounts is about the best cure IMO then. Sure it's a mild pain to type in 6+ letters and numbers, but it works. Plus, you can admin their time on the computer so that when you get home, it's ready for you since they're not hogging it with chat roulette, farmville, or something not useful like that.

Even if it's your parents, Pro's perks allow you to treat them like children.

Thanks, chumly. Right now, it's set up with a single account, no sign-in required. How do I go about setting up more than one account? I'd almost rather just have the one account and exclude any access outside of it.

Straight from the horse's mouth on how to create user accounts. I agree with Chumly, add additional Standard accounts and put a password on yours. If they try to do anything dumb it only mucks up their account(s) since they won't have your password and thus, they will be denied permission to install anything.

What you can do, and what I do, is to have multiple accounts and have it go right into my account on start up. If you walk away, log off. However, it doesn't take a genius to just reboot and they're right back in as Admin where they can change their own account settings. I'd beat ass if that happened though.

Type "netplwiz" in the run command, uncheck "users must enter a user name...", it pops up a dialog box, you enter and check the account you want all to log into upon start up, apply, and you're done.

But again, this is probably backwards for security in most homes. Just a simple password with a lower case, an upper case, and a number is a strong password and takes just seconds once you get the pattern memorized. We use it at work, and it's maybe a second out of the day. S^%65 or )(09SE is pretty quick and not something one would normally try to access someone else's machine.
