Built my gaming system and im so VERY happy with it.

Im thinking about picking up a radeon card so i can be all amd. anyways thinking about this system and what i do with it got me realizing.. i only game with this pc and watch online media. its a pure entertainment pc.

and with steam launching its new ubunto or whatever platform.. heck if linux supports google chrome and i can stream netflix youtube hulu and pandora.. and run steam.. i will be a happy camper.

so in short i guess what im asking is can someone give me a rundown on what a total newbie to linux should learn.. or how it compares.. or if it will do what i need it to do.

Just because Steam is coming to Linux doesn't mean the entire Steam catalog is now compatible with it. If anything, only Valve's games are going to be compatible with Linux out of the box. Everyone else will have to port it over or develop for it. And while Linux and Mac OS X follow a similar OS family, they're not the same in that devs can just simply hit compile and wallah (though I'm sure it's easier than doing Linux/OS X to Windows).

So no, you shouldn't "try" Linux.

Everyone should try Linux. It's just not YET the best hard core gaming platform.

It's not even close to the hard core part. Mac OS X is closer to it than Linux.

OP, if you really want to play around in Linux just to get the feel for it, spool up a VM like VirtualBox and install it in there.

...had to be the bluebird of joy, but there's no happy camping for you as long as you're including netflix in that mix....not to mention flash can be buggy as hell, so Hulu may prove being considerable work then what it's worth.

Doesn't Netflix use Microsoft Silverlight?

It does...but it also requires a DRM component that isn't implemented in Linux

,,,and I certainly wouldn't hold my breath for that to happen either...
