Im new to this wireless stuff. i have a dell inspiron 5100, and a dial-up connection. I was gonna get DSL, but im moving about 500 ft from an airport. I was wondering, what hardware and software do i need to pick up their network?

also, my laptop has a built in 802.11b (i think). how do i activate or use that?

500 feet is a bit too far.

It sounds like you'd need to buy an expensive high gain directional antenna to point towards the airport, and even then there's no guarantees that your WiFi adapter is outputting enough power to reach the airport.

Add to the fact that a lot of airports are whoring themselves out to T-Mobile, Boingo, and Wayport, so you'd probably have to sign up for it and pay a month charge.

You'd be better off getting DSL or Cable.
