I'd like to get a netbook and be able to use the internet sparingly when out of the house (in places where free Wi-Fi isn't available), but if this would cost me more than $10 a month, I'm not interested.

Are there any ways to pay by the minute or anything similar in place of getting an expensive monthly plan?

My cell phone is a pay as you go plan as I don't use that much either.

if you have a good cell phone with a data plan you can tether it to your laptop. You can get away with limited use without adding the $50 tethering data plan. A laptop connect card will cost you about $60 a month with a contract. You will also have a built in WiFi card on the netbook so as long as your in a good area you can get free access.

Look up Boingo. $10 a month for places like McDonalds, Airports, and Hotels. Any place with Paid-Wifi will have a way to log in with a Boingo account.

If you have an AT&T or T-Mobile phone with a Smartphone Data plan you can get free wifi access at any place that supports either of those too.

I laugh at specific smartphone plans now. I now have an iPhone on a Rogers (Canada represent!) pay-as-you-go plan (roughly $30 a month, if not paid it goes to a $1 a day until I top up my account) that includes unlimited data. When I saw that plan I jumped on it. I now tether my iphone to my netbook and get net access almost anywhere. It's a perfect solution for me.
