i have a p7811 fx. and i love it. but now i kind of want to buy a second laptop and am hoping gateway will come through soon with some of these features.

for one, i'd like to see a bump up from the p8400 to the p8600. this should be an easy task to achieve without changing the price of the laptop.

http://ark.Intel.com/ProductCollection. ... lyID=26548

according to that link the p8400's and the p8600's are selling for the same price. so that would be logical. although a p9600 would be nice :)

secondly, i'd like a bump up from the 9800m gts 1GB to a 9800m gt 1GB. this is based off of the current FX being sold, as my p7811 has 512MB.

9800m gts
9800m gt
9800m gtx

third, i'd like to see an even further bump in hard drive capacity. the 7811 has a 200GB 7200 rpm drive, the 2805 (not to be confused as inferior due to the lower model number) has a 320GB 7200 rpm drive. so how about that nice seagate momentus 500GB 7200 rpm drive?

fourth, an upgrade to the optical drive to give it blu ray reading capabilities. i don't care about burning blu ray.. i just want to watch them on that nice 1920x1200 resolution screen these laptops come with.

and lastly, fix the stupid volume buttons. instead of that touch sensitive slider, a simple plus and minus button would work better, but i'd even prefer a dial which i can physically turn.

ultimately, i'd be happy with a p8600, 9800m gt, and a blu ray video playback as well as a fixed volume controller

Dude. You do know that the mobile GTX200 series is coming out next month, right? and the mobile 4850/4870 are already out. Those would be the logical choices.

I think that the Q9100 would be a nice upgrade from the commonplace P8xxx's.

How about dual 7200RPM 500GB drives in RAID 0? That would be freaking awesome!!!

I think everything else is spot on.

For the record your scenario is much more likely to happen in the near future.

yeah i was just trying to read up on the newer ati parts but am not having the greatest of luck trying to find anything. and also i haven't heard anything about the newer nvidia's so im gonna go do a google search right now.

as for them using either of those tho i think it wont happen unless the mobility 4850 is fairly cheap and is better than the 9800gts? i'm assuming it would be but i am not caught up on mobile gpu's :P

keep in mind i'm still trying to keep this a ~$1,300 laptop :P

do you have any good links to read about the mobile gtx 200 series as well as the 4000 series of mobility radeons?

The mobile GTX series hasn't been launched yet. It'll be launched at Cebit, so I doubt there's much of anything other than "it's so awesome, you'll piss yourself"

^ has a P8600 and 4850 for 1350.

wow that msi has some nice specs.. i just wish it's screen was 1920x1200... i'm used to that now and i wont be able to go back. at least not on a 17" laptop

EDIT: i'm really liking this one from msi. it'll be one of my top choices if i am going to buy a new laptop soon.. altho i may wait for windows 7 to come out before i do that. i'm also waiting for windows 7 to do a new build for my home pc.

woah that has a WUXGA matte screen. Nice. The price is 1600 though. Not nice.

I have some bad news about Nvidia's GTX200 series. They originally started out with the 55nm chip in the desktop GTX285, and converted it to a laptop part. It was too hot, heavy, expensive, and power thirsty. Basically everything that a laptop doesn't need. So they tried to die-shrink it to 40nm. It failed. Hard. In fact, I'd even call it an Epic Fail.

The GPU couldn't take two die shrinks in a row (65 to 55, then to 40).

They're going to reuse the G92 AGAIN for the GTX200's....

The true GTX200 core will be redesigned to work with 40nm, and released as GTX300.

So basically, Nvidia fails, and ATI FTW (for laptops)
